The Delaware State University is the second largest University in the state of Delaware and it is a historically black oriented University. The nickname of the University sports teams is the Hornets.

The athletic programs of the University participate in NCAA's Division I (I-AA for football). The various sports sponsored by the University are football, basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, tennis, wrestling, volleyball, soccer and bowling.
In the year 2007, the Delaware State Football team won the MEAC football championship by defeating the Norfolk State University with a score of 28 to 21 in overtime giving them an automatic bid into the playoff. But the Hornets lost to the University of Delaware with a score of 44-7. The two football teams had never played each other in either schools history.
The Alumni stadium, located in Dover, Delaware is the home field of the Delaware State University Hornets football team. It was inaugurated in the year 1957 and it is a multi-purpose stadium with a seating capacity for 6,828 spectators.
