The conference hosts lively sports like football and basketball. The members of the Big East Conference for the football game are just eight conference schools out of the eleven. They sponsor the varsity football and are also the part of Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). This is not the end, it is supposed to be the top level of NCAA competition in football and till date sometimes recognized by its former designation of Division I-A. For basketball Big East hosts teams that have given 40 all time Final Four appearances and are holding the 10 National Championships. These numbers are surpassed by the Big Ten and Pac-10 respectively. South Florida is the only full time member which is believed not to have participated to the Final Four ever.

In 1979, Providence, St. John's Georgetown, and Syracuse wanted to form a conference exclusively for basketball. For that they invited Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College and then was formed the Big East. Soon, Villanova and Pittsburgh joined the conference in 1980 and 1982, respectively. Till that time the conference had only focused on basketball and that is why the regents of Big East rejected Penn State's admission application. Big East became serious after a decade to turn into a major football conference, then it included five schools which also had the four time champion Miami along with Temple, Virginia, Rutgers, West Virginia and Tech. After that the conference agreed to associate with the Penn State that year. The first season of Big East Football took place in the year 1991.
