The San Antonio Spurs started there history in the ABA. The club was one of four to come over in the NAB-ABA merger in 1976. The Spurs were chosen for the merger because of their ability to sell tickets. Many teams in the ABA were in precarious financial positions and the NBA only wanted the teams that could support themselves, only the Spurs, Nugget, Pacers, and Nets made the cut. The merger resulted in a dispersal draft that landed the Spurs their first superstar player, George “Iceman” Gervin.

The Iceman’s smooth finger roll made the Spurs an instant playoff contender in the superior NBA game. San Antonio went o the playoffs in their first seven seasons in the NBA, winning their division five times behind the scoring of Gervin. Seasons passed and although the club was selling tickets to watch the high-scoring forward the team was beginning to head to the cellar of the league. After five terrible years at the bottom, the Spurs drafted David Robinson from Navy. The athletic center was actually drafted in 1987, but had two serve two years in the Navy before heading to the NBA.
With Robinson and new coach Larry Brown the San Antonio was again a playoff contender and fans were buying Spurs tickets to see post-season as well as regular season games. Robinson developed into one of the best centers in the game, with his rare combination of agility, strength, and height. He won the MVP in 1995, but would not lead the Spurs to the NBA championships until 1999.
In 1997, the Spurs lucked out and won the first pick in the draft after a disastrous season. They took Tim Duncan, an extremely polished post player. Duncan and Robinson became known as the “Twin Towers”. In just Duncan’s second year San Antonio won their first NBA championship and Duncan won the NBA Finals MVP. The Spurs remained competitive at a championship level for the next few years, finally recapturing the title in 2003.
Duncan had emerged as the unquestioned star of San Antonio. Fans were buying tickets to watch the three time MVP play and Robinson humbly accepted the complimentary role, but after the 2003 Finals victory “The Admiral” retired after a long 14-year career. Without Robinson the Spurs were supposed to struggle, but the organization had built a strong roster of talented international players. Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentinean Manu Ginobli emerged to fill the void left by Robinson.
San Antonio continued where they left off, constantly threatening to win the championship. The Spurs won the championship again just two seasons after Robinson retired and another in the 2006-07 season.
