Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz are historically known for their Stockton-Malone years. John Stockton was the point guard from the 1984 draft and Karl Malone was the power forward from the 1985 draft that pick and rolled the defenses of every team apart during their long career together. The two started their relationship in the mid to late ‘80s when they were good for Jazz playoff tickets, but not good for championship level play. They competed with the athletic Malone blocking shots and hitting 15 foot jumpers off passes form Stockton. >> More alt

About Utah Jazz

In the ‘90s the team began to reach its peak. Stockton and Malone had become great defensive players and the pick and roll was second nature. The front office built a cast around them to stop any other team in the league. Greg Ostertag was the big body in the middle, Byron Russell was a defensive presence at the two guard who could hit big shots, and Shandon Anderson and Howard Eisely came in to provide tenacious defense while Jerry Sloan sat Stockton. Playoff tickets were available for deeper and deeper trips into the postseason. The trips led to the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998. Both times they squared off against the Chicago Bulls. Though Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman beat them both series in six games, each contest was a battle that went strong for 48 minutes.

The 2008-09 season once again carries hopes for Jazz playoff tickets to EnergySolutions Arena. This time the combination of Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer is the deadly 1-2 punch that terrorizes teams. Williams is a point guard that looks to score more than Stockton, but his passes often land in the hands of Boozer, who can hit the mid-range jumper or take the ball to the rim. Shooters give Williams more options. Mehmet Okur takes big men to the outside with his three pint shot, Matt Harping is a solid shooter who can surprisingly drive, and Kyle Korver is another pure shooter that can spread the floor.

Utah could not survive the regular season schedule without some defense. Ronnie Brewer and Andrei Kirilenko bring a strong presence to the starting lineup. Brewer is not a very good offensive threat, but his quickness and tenacity on D make up for the liability that Williams is when he is not handling the rock. Kirilenko (AK-47) can guard all five positions and can, on occasion, bring a decent shot to the floor. He used to be an all around nightmare for other teams, but injuries and new players have made him more of a defensive presence. Paul Millsap comes off the bench, rebounds, provides a big body in the lane, and plays with hustle when Boozer is resting. In the Western Conference team play is the only way to a make it to the postseason and this team has the team unity to make Jazz playoff tickets happen for years to come.
