The Oklahoma City Thunder are beginning the 2008-09 season with a young core. Shooting guard Kevin Durant, small forward Jeff Green, and future point guard Russell Westbrook. They are ready to take the team into the future. Before those future stars, the Thunder were led by many great players in Seattle when the team was known as the Sonics. These teams include the Sonics of the 1970s that included Jack Sykma, Dennis Johnson, and Spencer Haywood. The team avenged a finals loss to the Washington Bullets in ’78 with a championship in 1979. The late ‘80s were a period of great hope as well. Tom Chambers, Dale Ellis, and Xavier McDaniel took charge and nearly reached the finals in 1987, but Magic Johnson and the Showtime Lakers had a great run of their own that season. In the ‘90s the Sonics thrived with Shawn Kemp, a monster of a power forward with a good midrange jump shot, and Gary Payton, a point guard who could run an offense and bear down on the perimeter as a defender. The Sonics reached the finals with playoff tickets for their fans in 1995. They could not beat the 72-10 Chicago Bulls though.

This season the Thunder hope to begin their own version of the Bulls. Durant is a rare talent that can dominate any team on the Thunder schedule thanks to his athleticism, his jump shot, and his determination. At 6 foot 9 the guard is too tall for a guard to cover and at shooting guard he is too quick for a forward to stop him. If he relies less on his three point shot, at least until he perfects it, then the Thunder could have a shot at the eight or seven seed for the postseason. Playoff tickets are far from guaranteed, but much more likely than a season ago.
He will be helped by Jeff Green at the Ford Center. Green was taken with him in the 2007 NBA Draft. Green is a talented complimentary player. He can shoot, defend, and rebound. He will be Durant’s Scottie Pippen. Earl Watson is the point guard who has been effective everywhere he has gone, but not appreciated. In Oklahoma City he will be appreciated. His veteran leadership will be key making the Thunder a contender for playoff tickets. The Thunder should be a fun squad to watch this season, and if this is not the year for a postseason appearance that season will be soon.
