Patrick Ewing was a dominant center roaming the lane and hitting the outside jumper, Allan Houston was the sweet shooting guard demanding attention, and a bevy of players would join the team to become thorns in other team’s sides. About The New York Knicks
This season the Knicks hope to begin the rode back to those days. The change from Isiah Thomas to Mike D’Antoni and Donnie Walsh is hopefully a change from the lottery to Knicks playoff tickets. The change will bring in a new strategy and new attitude. The franchise that had been collecting talent will now try to act as a collective team. Chris Duhon’s signing is the first sign of change. No longer will Stephon Marbury dominate the ball and look more for his shot than an open teammate. Duhon cannot break players down off the dribble or play nearly the defense, but he does want to be a facilitator and the first step to creating an offense where ball movement is the most important aspect is a point guard willing to move the ball from his hands.
The restrictions of the salary cap and the near $40 million excess of the Knicks limits what other changes the front office can manage, apart from a few mid-level exception signings and adding a few draft picks. Thus, New York is stuck with much of the same roster. The roster is not bad though. Jamal Crawford may not be the most consistent shooter, but the streaky marksman is unstoppable once he gets going. Quentin Richardson in ability to find a spot on the court because of his size and his love for the outside shot could work well in this system. His bulk and his speed may make him the Shawn Marion of the Knicks. This of course leaves the roles of Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry up in the air. The two players are built for a half court offense and this should be a full court team. This is the first season of many questions that will be answered in the next few seasons, and this could also be the start of the road to Knicks playoff tickets if the new coach and general manager are able to work miracles.
