The Los Angeles Lakers history is long and the postseason glories are stuff of legend. From George Mikan and the boys in Minneapolis to Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West in the incredible 1971-72 season to Magic and the Showtime Lakers in the 1980s the playoffs almost always have a Lakers storyline. The latest titles came at the turn of the century. Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant became one of the best center-guard pairs in history with three straight titles. The team filled in the void after the Bulls dynasty and gave NBA fans another to team to hate or love. Los Angeles fans showed their love at the Staples Center each year as the hard-to-get Lakers playoff tickets invariably went to the finals from the 1999-2000 season to the 2001-02 season. The love for the players on the court was not shared in the locker room. Shaq and Kobe began to clash as the seasons went on and eventually Kobe’s rising star forced Shaq to leave.

The Lakers looked like fools for a couple of seasons after trading Shaq to the Heat. Shaq and the Heat went on to win a championship as another great center relationship was formed between Shaq and Dwayne Wade. Los Angeles bounced back though. Kobe Bryant continues to be perhaps the best player in the league and a mid-season trade last year brought Pau Gasol over from the Grizzlies in a trade that many considered to be criminal. Gasol gives the Lakers another big man to pair with Andrew Bynum in the post. The three- Bryant, Gasol, and Bynum- are all young and are sure to be soon under contract for seasons to come. This season they still have Lamar Odom, a versatile player who can play either forward spot. The team is expected to roll over opponents as three or four players in the starting lineup need to be double teamed. Lakers playoff tickets are now virtually guaranteed for seasons to come.
The Lakers have more than just four stars. They also have a quality quota of role players. Derek Fisher has made a career of sitting in the corner and waiting for the ball to find its way to him for an open three. He starts at point guard and his stats are sure to be padded with all the talent around him. The efforts of bench players like Sash Vujacic, Luke Walton, and Vladimir Radmanovic are just as important to those lucky enough to get Lakers playoff tickets. Vujacic is a good defender who can let Bryant rest or a good shooter who can help create a big backcourt. Walton does all the little things. He is a great passer, a good rebounder, and just a hustle player. For a while he was starting, but his contributions are best coming off the bench. Radmanovic is a deep threat that spreads the defense and makes team pay for double teaming anybody. The loss of Ronny Turiaf is a string blow to the toughness of a team that will have to deal with the fouls the young Bynum is sure to pick up. Chris Mihm is hardly the defensive presence or the rebounder a coach wants to see out there. He is a finesse player instead. The cast of the Lakers this season should, nonetheless, stomp the rest of the competition in the Western Conference and easily run through the regular season schedule for a high seed in the postseason.
