The Detroit Pistons long history goes back to the days in the NBL when they were the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons and their intense rivalry with the Sheboygan Red Skins ended in four meetings in the championship series. The teams split the series and the Pistons would have to wait years before another title victory. That championship came in 1989 with Isiah Thomas and the Bad Boys, a cast of characters noted for their tough play. That cast included Bill Laimbeer, Vinnie Johnson, Joe Dumars, John Salley, Dennis Rodman, James Edwards, and Adrian Dantley. Pistons playoff tickets saw Detroit knock its opponents down knocking down threes and driving to the hoop. The team filled the void between the Celtic and Lakers of the ‘80s and the Bulls of the ‘90s. In 2004, the Pistons brought the finals back to Detroit at the Palace at Auburn Hills. The tea again stressed defense. The starting lineup of Chauncey Billips and Richard Hamilton in the back court and Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace, and Ben Wallace in the front court upset the Los Angeles Lakers on their way to bringing the NBA title back to the Eastern Conference for the first time since 1998.

The Pistons come into the 2008-09 season with the same main players as last season and the season before. Chauncey Billups is the offensive catalyst for the club. His ability to drive, his vision, and his ability to stop and pop a three keeps the other team on its toes. Also his incredible strength makes him one of the toughest point guards to cover. Richard Hamilton is a master at moving without the ball, able to weave between defenders and around picks to get open for a jump shot or easy lay up. The frontcourt has the long arms of Prince to disrupt just about every player in the league. His reach and his quickness make up for his slight frame and, though it may look funny, his shot has come in handy in big game situations. Rasheed Wallace can still be a headache, but his ability to play in the post and on the outside terrorizes most teams. Antonio McDyess is a solid all around player who mans the center position. These starting five are key to the run for playoff tickets for Detroit.
Playing in the Eastern Conference is one of the biggest advantages for the team. The Pistons playoff tickets are almost guaranteed every season and the team is able to play just enough tough competition during the regular seasons schedule to keep them on their toes without wearing them down by the end of the postseason. The challenge is, of course, to overcome the Boston Celtics. This team is one of the few with the defense in place to challenge such a team. The defense can smother the big three and the offense can move around the tenacious defense to score like few clubs can. Detroit used to be the team you had to go through to get to the Finals from the Eastern Conference, but now the journey will force the contenders to go through Boston.
