About The Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks come into this season with the same starting lineup as last year’s playoff squad. The summer-signing of Josh Smith solidified the team. Smith has the amazing hops and strength to become a blocking machine despite only being 6 foot 9. He likes to shoot the three, but is much better inside the arc where his thunderous dunks and a decent short range jumper that nobody can guard. His continued development as a player is one of the keys to a return to playoff tickets. His front court mates are young and will be counted on for similar steps forward. Al Horford is set to become a rebounding master in just his second season. He has a decent low post game with his big behind giving him some cushion between his outstretched hand and the defender that gives him time to turn quickly without allowing the defender to close the gap easily. Marvin Williams is a mystery. He needs to develop a consistent outside shot, but he is good inside the arc and he can rebound. He really just ahs a ton of talent but has yet to perform consistently.
The postseason would be a dream if it were not for the backcourt. Joe Johnson is a great shooter with some ability to drive. He looked like a potential super star to seasons ago, but has simply become a star player who works well in a collaborative unit. If he ever gets back to the automatic level from three that he achieved with the Phoenix Suns in 2005 then he will be unstoppable and Atlanta will have Hawks playoff tickets for seasons to come. Then he had Steve Nash, but now he has Mike Bibby. Bibby is at the end of his career and provides the veteran experience that can take the team through the regular season schedule. He also can no longer play defense in a league that has become a playground for young quick point guards. The season will be interesting at Philips Arena as Bibby tries to make his offensive facilitation worth his defensive liability.
