About NBA Basketball

In 1946, the BAA or Basketball Association of America was founded. Surprisingly, the BBA was founded by ice hockey arena owners looking to host games and make money in their arenas during the off season of hockey. Then in 1949, the BAA and NBL (National Basketball League) merged, creating the power-force known now as the NBA. But they spent the first few years condensing the teams and in 1954 there were only 8 franchises total. As the league began to rebuild, strengthen and the teams moved into bigger cities, NBA tickets sales began to soar.

Who would have imagined what the 1960's would bring when the Boston Celtics became the first power team of the NBA. Other teams started moving to big cities. The Lakers moved from Minneapolis to Los Angeles, the Philadelphia Warriors to San Francisco and the Syracuse Nationals to Philadelphia where they became better known as the 76ers. In 1968, the NBA finally began expanding again, now from 9 teams to 14. The 1970's saw the teams expanding even more raising the number of teams near the end of the 1970's to 22. Two of the biggest stars to come out of this era and two of the biggest NBA ticket drawers were Julius Erving and Kareem Abdul Jabar.

The 1980's saw even more stars and the rise of another power-house and Boston Celtic Rival, the Los Angeles Lakers. In fact, the 80's were better known in NBA as the Magic vs. Bird era. Magic Johnson, the Lakers biggest rookie star, and Larry Bird, the Boston Celtics rookie star caused the NBA ticket sales to skyrocket. Bird went on to lead the Celtics to three titles and Magic led his Los Angeles Lakers to an amazing 5 titles. The 80's also introduced another team into the league, the Dallas Mavericks.

In the 1990's, the name Michael Jordan brought NBA ticket sales soaring. In fact, he was such an inspiring basketball player, he alone inspired 4 more teams to start franchises in the NBA bringing the total number of teams up to 27.
