The Grizzlies weren't the only team to apply to relocate to Memphis in 2001. The Charlotte Hornets also wanted a chance to move to the great city of Memphis, but it was the Grizzlies who were granted the rights to call this historical town home. While the FedEx corporation had high hopes that the team would change its name to the Memphis Express, But the NBA would have none of this. In 2001, the Memphis Grizzlies acquired Pau Gasol in a trade and after his first season with the Grizzlies, Gasol won the Rookie of the year award, then they drafted Shane Battier who would become the fan favorite and biggest draw for Memphis Grizzlies tickets. Even with the strong team drafted, manager Billy Knight was asked to leave and was replaced by legendary former Laker, Jerry West. West won the executive of the year award the very next year and after his arrival, the team was drastically revamped.
A new head coach was brought in after a terrible start to the 2002-2003 season. Hubie Brown was hired to take over the coaching duties and with his addition to the team, the Memphis Grizzlies would finally see a playoff season in 2004. Brown stepped down the next year however and at his leaving, the Grizzlies ticket holders had a team that had a losing record. As soon as new coach Mike Fratello came in to replace Brown, the team snapped out of its funk and was finally back on track finishing their season with a trip to the post season for the second consecutive season. Their advancement was stopped though by the Phoenix Suns who took the team out of the playoffs in the first round.
The Houston Grizzlies ticket holders saw the 2006-2007 season starting without their star player Gasol. The team went 1-7 because he was limited to only a few minutes per game. Tired with the whole situation, Fratello was fired and Tony Barone Sr. came as an interim coach until another full time could be found. Barone wasn't a coach, he was the team's personnel director and had never before coached an NBA game. It was no surprise that the disappointed Memphis Grizzlies ticket holding fans were left nursing the wounds of a 22-60 season record.
With another new head coach running the team, Lionel Hollins, there may be a ray of sunshine peeking through. Memphis Grizzlies tickets will be easy to acquire. Even with the draft of Hasheem Thabeet and DeMarre Carroll, we can only hope that there is a miracle on the court. The team is still struggling to find its identity and to gain confidence. But with a little hope and the faith of their fans, the Memphis Grizzlies just might be able to pull off a trip to the post season.
