Sprint Cup Series

The Sprint Cup Series is NASCAR’s top racing series. The championship series runs for nine months and 36 races. Last year’s champion Jeff Gordon returns with to compete with Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart, and more of racing’s best drivers in the most exciting races in the world.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series History

The Sprint Cup Series is just the latest name for NASCAR’s championship series. The series was originally known as the Strickly Stock Series when it began in 1949, and changed its name one year later to the Grand National Series. Since then it has been known as the Winston Cup Series and the NEXTEL Cup Series. The Sprint Cup Series is its first year.

The racers drive cars built for the rigors of the tracks and speeds. These front engine rear-wheel drive machines have roll cages that serve as a space frame chassis and thin sheet metal skin. The closed cockpit, rear wing, and aerodynamic splitter allow the V8 engines and 800 horsepower to travel near 200 miles per hour.

Contrary to popular belief, NASCAR is not the same oval track in every location. Instead the tracks vary in size (from .526 miles to 2.66 miles) in different shapes. Tracks come in ovals, quad-ovals, D-ovals, uneven-ended ovals, triangular, and rectangular.

The cars driving these tracks this year will be the Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger, Ford Fusion, and Toyota Camry as part of the Cars of Tomorrow. Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and the rest of the best will race this year trying to go down in history with NASCAR legends Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.
