The traditional venue for the race is Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, just north of Charlotte. It has the unique distinction of being the first major race track to host night race; it also was the first motor speedway that offered condominiums that overlook the race track. The race was jointly sponsored by General Motors and the United Auto Worker until 2005 and was then known as the UAW-GM Quality 500. After, 2005 ‘Bank of America’ became the new sponsor in Early 2006 and hence the new name for this race is ‘Bank of America 500’.

The Bank of America has seen numerous changes of schedules. The race was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoons, but traditionally ran late creating problems for race viewers and line-up problems for NBC. Some problems were god gifted, like the rain delayed start in 2002, which led the race finishing at night. But, this was a fortunate occurrence as the ratings of the race increased by leaps and bounds.

Prompted by the increased ratings, track officials rescheduled the 2003 race to a Saturday night. The Saturday night became a permanent fixture as it seemed to work well for the fans (they had not problems in staying up as most of them had a holiday the next day).

The race has seen its share of excitement and achievements, with driver the race being won by Driver Jimmie Johnson in 2005. He came in at 336 laps and his total was a grand a 504 miles. This lead to a few changes in the driver’s rankings and the legendary Jimmie Johnson found himself in the second position in the Nextel Cup standings. He has won the Bank of America 500 for two years running.

1960, was the year in which the very first Bank of America 500 was hosted and was then called National 400. The victor for that inaugural drive was driver Speedy Thompson. Saturday, October 14th is the scheduled date for the 2006 Bank of America 500 with race coverage beginning at 7 p.m on NBC.

Though there are still a few months for the race to get underway, there is already a rush for the tickets to the race. Fans do not want to miss an opportunity to be a part of this rip-roaring spectacle. If you are a racing enthusiast, then it is time that you contacted the nearest vendor of tickets, for the race.
