Stock car racing is a type of automobile racing practiced mainly in the United States and held in principal on banked and concrete oval shaped tracks of approximately 1/2 mile to 2.66 miles that is about 0.8 to 4.2 kilometers in length; however it is sometimes also raced on conventional racing circuits, which are known as road courses. The ovals shorter than one mile in length (about 1.6 km) are known as short tracks; while unpaved short tracks are known as dirt tracks. Longer typical ovals are known as super speed ways. The races are in general 200 to 600 miles about 300 to 1000 kms in length. The average speeds for the top classes are somewhere around 160 miles an hour i.e. 275.5 kilometers per hour. Some NASCAR races go up to speeds of about 200 miles per hour at tracks such as the Talladega Super speedway and the Daytona International Speedway.
