The idea for the track was born in 1958 by a handful of men who dreamed of building a stellar racing track for stock cars, a super speedway. They were Walker Jackson, Ike Supporter, Ralph Sceiano, Lloyd Smith and Garland Bagley. Unfortunately financial troubles caused four of them to back out and four other men were brought on board- Bill Boyd, Art Lester, Jack Black and Dr. Warren Gremmel. With an investment of 1.8 million dollars the group were able to get the facility ready- although what exactly they meant by ready was anybody's guess.

About Atlanta 500
The track still had a lot to be desired- the lower seats could not see the track, there were only three bathrooms and there was mud everywhere. It wasn't until 1960 that the track was able to be used- the track was christened the Atlanta International Raceway and it became the seventh super speedway to host the Winston Cup. However financial troubles continued to dog the track- during the sixties and seventies a series of setbacks caused the track to declare bankruptcy during the seventies. Despite this, the Atlanta 500 was pulling in more fans than ever, including key figures in the community as well as celebrities, including Jimmy Carter.
It wasn't until the nineties that the track began to get a new lease on life. Under new ownership, the track was renamed the Atlanta Motor Speedway and seating capacity was increased, not to mention the addition of luxury suites that gave a stellar view of the track. More additions, innovations and repairs were to come and today the track is a modern racing facility of the very best, catering to all kinds of racing, events, and contests. But the big favorite continues to be the Atlanta 500, with its 1.54 mile track covering 870 acres with turns and bends to match the best of them.
