Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals are a Washington D.C based professional baseball team and they are also a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) National League (NL). Baseball fans still buy the Washington National tickets even though this team has not won a single pennant or World Series championship. They have, however, won a division championship, causing them to advance to the National League Championship Series in 1981 - their only playoff appearance – during the strike-shortened season. This gave a little hope to Washington Nationals ticket holding fans. >> More alt

About The Washington Nationals

In 1969 the Washington Nationals, then known as the “Montreal Expos”, joined the National League. The Nationals lost 110 games in their first season. This grieved the Washington Nationals ticket holders, especially since the team continued to struggle during their first ten years with sub -.500 seasons. This greatly lowered the sales of Washington Nationals tickets. In 1976 they were still in last place, losing a total of 107 games.

In 1979 the team won a franchise-high 95 games, coming in second place in the National League East, giving hope to the fans who had bought Washington Nationals tickets. The Expos began in the 1980’s with a core group of young players which included catcher Gary Carterwho, outfielders Tim Raines and Andre Dawson, third baseman Tim Wallach and pitchers Bill Gullickson and Steve Rogers. In 1981 the team won its only division championship in the strike-shortened split season. The win increased not only the sales of the Washington Nationals tickets but also the expectations of their fans.

The Nationals spent the best part of the 80’s in the middle of the National League East pack, finishing third or fourth place in 8 out of 9 seasons (from 1982 to 1990). Before the beginning of the 1985 season, Buck Rodgers was hired to manage the team and he guided the Nationals to a better record five times in six years. In 1987, the team won a total of 91 games and finished third but they were a mere 4 games behind the division-winning Cardinals. Fans with Washington Nationals tickets were glad to see the team’s progression.

Felipe Alou, who had been a member of the Expos organization since 1976, was promoted to field manager in May 1992. Alou became the very first Dominican Born Manager in Major Leauge Baseball history. He guided the Nationals to winning records. In 1994 when the team was led by a skilled group of players which included Larry Walker, Marquis Grissom, Moises Alou and Pedro Martinez, they had the best record in major leagues. But the 1994 major league baseball strike forced the cancellation of the remainder of the season’s games. After this huge disappointment, the Nationals’ management decided to shed its key players, dramatically reducing the team’s fan base and therefore lowering ticket sales.

2009 Season Preview

Even though the Nationals didn’t do so well in the 2008 season, the team has assured the Washington National ticket holders that they will perform much better in the 2009 season. This team is not made up of bad players, they just need to find their rhythm.

On July 27, 2009 the National’s Josh Willingham hit 2 grand slams in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Willingham is now the thirteenth (13th) player in Major League Baseball to accomplish this feat.
