The New York Yankees are coming back in 2012 with the intention to not only take the AL East, but also take the ALCS and add a 28th World Series to the franchise’s trophy case. Yankee Stadium is certainly going to be filled with fans who purchased Yankees tickets with those exact lofty expectations. General Manager Brian Cashman has certainly done his best to reach those expectations.

He imported Hiroki Kurado from Las Angeles via free agency and traded away some major talent at the plate to acquire Michael Pineda. These two certainly join the starting rotation in 2012. Kurado is a veteran with a strong track record. Pineda came in sixth in the AL Rookie of the Year voting last season. The Yanks Ivan Nova finished ahead of him. CC Sabathia just signed a five-year extension and returns the staff ace. Kurado, Pineda, and Nova make up the middle of the starting rotation. Phil Hughes or A.J. Burnett will be bringing up the rear.
The NY Yankees will need the offense to remain healthy throughout the 2012 Yankees schedule. It is no longer up to Derek Jeter and ARod to anchor the offense. Jeter is getting older and may be spending time at DH as he becomes a bigger liability at shortstop. ARod just returned from experimental surgery in Germany. That all sounds a little scary. Instead, first baseman Mark Teixeira, second baseman Robinson Cano, and players with particular offensive skill sets like Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, and Andruw Jones must hit those home runs, steal those bases, and continue to draw walks.
Perhaps the biggest concern for the offense is Granderson. Last year he hit 41 homeruns. This is out of the ordinary for him. All his other stats were within range (though not his RBI, but that is not a stat completely reliant on him), so expect about 15 less home runs. If Jones is able to play two thirds of a season, then he may be able to make up a chunk of those numbers.
