The Blue Jays are best known for the early ‘90s when they repeated as World Series champs. By 1992 Cito Gaston had taken over as manager, the SkyDome was open, and the roster was coming together to make the Blue Jays perennial American League East division title holders. Playoff tickets were a certainty with Joe Carter, Roberto Alomar, Dave Winfield, Devon White, Jack Morris, and Tom Henke on the roster. The team finished 96-66 and was able to win the American League Championship Series for the first time in four tries.
Toronto dispatched with the Oakland Athletics in the ALCS and gave their fans a chance to buy World Series tickets for the first time in their 15 year history. The match up with the Braves found two young up and coming playoff teams meeting. The Blue Jays were able to overcome the incredible pitching of the Braves starters and found its unlikely heroes in Pat Borders and Ed Sprague.
The next season the Blue Jays were favorites to repeat despite the loss of Winfield and Henke. Toronto filled in the gaps with Paul Molitor and Dave Stewart. That season John Olerud, Paul Molitor, and Roberto Alomar finished in the top three spots for the AL batting crown. That explosive offense again topped the American League East and again provided playoff tickets for their fans.
This time the Blue Jays took out the Chicago White Sox in the ALCS and met the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series. Those with tickets saw a great series that went six games and ended with a home run by Joe Carter off Mitch Williams that brought the Blue Jays back from a deficit to win the series.
In 2008 the strength of the Blue Jays is the pitching. Roy Halladay has been incredible again and continues to be the most ignored ace in the majors. Shaun Marcum and Jesse Litsch are good starters but the real strength of the team is the bullpen. Scott Downs, Jesse Carlson, and Brandon League consistently hold the games until B.J. Ryan can come in and wrap them up. The Blue Jays cannot have playoff tickets without some offense though. Vernon Wells and Alex Rios have been the keys to the team’s success when they are up to bat.
