The San Diego Padres are like any other team in August and September. The pennant race has been heating up and the teams are all fighting for a playoff spot or to be the spoilers that kill other team’s tickets to the postseason. The Padres battle all year long, from spring training to the All Star break to the late summer months to be able to be mentioned in the World Series discussion.

San Diego has had a few chances to be part of that discussion too. The team came through the expansion year slump to build a young team starring Tony Gwynn, Steve Garvey, Garry Templeton, and Alan Wiggins. Gwynn won his first of eight batting titles that season and helped the Padres win their first pennant, upset the Chicago Cubs to keep their curse alive, and take the team to the World Series. There the Detroit Tigers ended the Padres great run. Those with tickets saw the Tigers dismantle San Diego in five games.
The next time the Padres were able to provide World Series tickets for their fans was in 1998. San Diego played the role of underdog in those playoffs, first keeping the Houston Astros from a shot at the fall classic in the NLDS, then ending the Atlanta Braves playoff run in the NLCS, and finally meeting the New York Yankees in the World Series. The Yankees proved to be too good that year, like in many other years that decade, and swept the Padres.
The 2008 Padres squad is a squad of immensely talented stars that will need to perform extremely well and hope for help from the rest of the club; otherwise the playoff tickets will have been purchased in vain. Jake Peavy is a great pitcher who lacks the run support at times and the will need the rest of the rotation to step up to fill in for the days he cannot make out to the mound. Adrian Gonzalez put together another great season, but will need more than just Kevin Kouzmanoff’s bat to keep the series winnable.
