About The New York Mets

The Amazin’ Mets history may not be as celebrated as the cross town Yankees, but the franchise has still given the fans something to hope for with successful seasons bringing back memory of great fall nights watching the Mets from the stands with their playoff tickets clutched close in hand.

The New York Mets started out as the Lovable Losers, a team seemingly destined to hold the memory of a National League team in New York with a roster full of ex-star players that once captivated the city. The team changed though, and by 1969 the potential for championship play outside the Bronx became a reality. The team finished with a miraculous run winning 38 of the final 49 games and erasing a 10 game deficit that saw them leap frog the St. Louis Cardinals before overtaking the Chicago Cubs and winning the first National League East title. Playoff tickets seemed beyond the reach for the club, but the late season’s stellar play gave Mets’ fans hope for the post season, even if the rest of the league did not seem to agree

A surprise sweep of the Braves and an even more shocking 4 to 1 game victory in the World Series made sure that Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Cleon Jones would forever be remembered by fans as the Mets pooled off a miracle that would become the model for late season heroics and give managers and players a tale to remind them why they played 162 games a season with heart all the way through. The incredible run proved that tickets to the post season were rarely too far too reach for.

The surprise season was followed with an unsuccessful World Series in 1973 and a departure from the new found winning ways that lasted for 13 difficult seasons for fans at Shea Stadium. The post season would return as young talents like Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden encouraged fans to hope for Mets playoff tickets once again. In 1986 the young talent collaborated with veterans like Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, and Wally Backman for a dominant performance that almost guaranteed the Mets a post season appearance from the start of the season.

The season ended with 108 victories and tickets to a National League Championship Series with the Houston Astros that found the batter trying to make hit off Mike Scott and Nolan Ryan. The competitive series went six games and the Mets gave fans another World Series to remember. The Red Sox seemed to have victory sealed in game six, but an error by first baseman Bucky Dent allowed the Mets to take the game, tie the series, and win in compelling fashion in game seven.

The New York Mets followed with seasons of unrealized potential and a downfall in the 1990s where money seemed to only buy them more and more failure. The team has been rebuilding ever since and returned with playoff tickets in 1999 and 2000. Though the Mets loss to the Yankees in 2000 seemed to take a great deal out of them, they have returned with a young team that beckons back to memories of that 1986 team.

David Wright, Carlos Beltran, and Carlos Delgado will need to provide plenty of run support to help Mike Pelfrey and Oliver Perez on the mound. Santana has been superb all season long on the mound and playoff tickets to his games will probably see an easy victory, but the rest of the staff needs to be more Hyde than Jekyll if the Mets are too seriously contend.
