The Brewers, unfortunately, have not been able to oblige most of those dreams of playoff tickets. The only time Milwaukee has been able to take the team to the postseason was back in 1981 and 1982 during the midst of the team’s best years. Since then the team has struggled to even compete for second place. The realignment that sent the Brewers from the American League East to the AL Central did little to help and the move from the AL Central to the NL Central was simply a lateral move that left the team struggling.
The years Milwaukee did win a division title they were in the American League East back and they were fighting off the New York Yankees. Those teams had power hitter like Cecil Cooper, Ben Oglivie, and Gorman Thomas. They also had a shortstop by the name of Robin Yount who the MVP in 1982. His teammate, pitcher Rollie Fingers, won the MVP and the Cy Young the year before. The Brewers even won the Cy Young the next year with Pete Vuckovich. With all the talent and an offense nicknamed Harvey’s Wallbangers.
The Brewers first trip to the playoffs matched them with the New York Yankees in the odd playoff format of the 1981 season. The team would lose the series, but take them to the fifth game in a best of five series. The next season fans had tickets to see them beat the Angels in the ALCS and then almost beat the Cardinals in the World Series. The Cardinals won game seven though, and the Brewers have not yet returned.
This version of the Milwaukee Brewers has the same type of team as the Brew Crew from the early ‘80s. The lineup is loaded with power hitters. Corey Hart, J.J. Hardy, Prince Fielder, and Mike Cameron can all take any pitch out of the park. Ryan Braun is the all around player who hits for average, power, and driving players in. Ben Sheets and C.C. Sabathia are the two Cy Young contenders that can dominate games 1 and 2 of any series. The 2008 Brewers are like the 1981 team redux and fans cannot wait to purchase playoff tickets.
