The bulk of the Royals playoff memories come from the seasons between 1975 and 1985. Kansas City was a young franchise and immediately began to compete with the likes of the Yankees, the Orioles, and the Red Sox. The Royals won six American League Western division titles and turned out playoff tickets for two pennants and a intra-state World Series.
The first World Series for the Royals matched Kansas City up with the Philadelphia Phillies after George Brett took the Yankees Goose Gossage deep to win the ALCS. The Phillies won in six games, but the Royals had finally overcome the Yankees and would soon return to the fall classic.
Playoff tickets were available for the 1981 and 1984 season, but Royals fans will remember the year 1985 best of all. George Brett and Steve Balboni were the main offensive forces, but the real key to the team was the pitching staff. Brett Saberhagen won the Cy Young Award with 20 wins and 158 strikeouts, and the rest of the staff was equally as formidable with Charlie Leibrandt, Dan Quisenberry, and Danny Jackson. The Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS and went to face fellow Missourians, the St. Louis Cardinals. After a closely contested six games the series stood at 3-3. The Royals came out that game and decimated the Red Birds, winning the series with a commanding 11-0 win.
The 2008 Kansas City Royals will rely on the pitching of Zack Greinke, Gil Meche, and Luke Hochevar to take them and their playoff tickets far in October. On the offensive side of the game, David DeJesus has been a spark plug that has Alex Gordon and Miguel Olivo hitting very well behind him. The Royals will need to continue this hot streak to make the postseason last this year.
