Houston again went to work conquering their demons, first beating the Atlanta Braves again in the NLDS and then striking back for the season before, dispatching the St. Louis Cardinals in six games in the NLCS. Their first trip to the World Series did not end in their first victory. Instead, the Chicago White Sox beat the Astros in four straight games.

For the Astros to avoid an early exit the team will need the supporting cast around the new cornerstones of the team, Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee, to step up. Ty Winnington and Miguel Tejada have to hit better with runners on and rising star Hunter Pence needs to transform into the third amigo. It is not that the players are not hitting, it is that the pitching staff has struggled. Roy Oswalt, Brian Moehler and Wandy Rodriguez have been mediocre, but they are the three best starters. The bullpen is not much better, so the team will live and die by the offense.
