Detroit Tigers

The number 100 means a great deal to the Detroit Tigers. Their history has seen the club lose 100 games and be completely out of the running for playoff tickets before the All Star break and it has seen clubs win over 100 games and lead the field in the pennant race. Either way the extremes of the ups and downs of the Detroit Tigers has made every season an adventure. >> More alt

About The Detroit Tigers

The adventure has led to the postseason a few times as well. The Tigers won early pennants in 1907, 1908, and 1909 and were able to play in the infancy of the World Series, though they lost twice to the Chicago Cubs and once to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Playoff tickets to the 1935 and 1945 World Series saw the Tigers get their revenge on the Cub.

In 1935 the Tigers beat the Cubs in six games with Mickey Cochrane, Hank Greenberg, and Charlie Gehringer. The next World Series title came a decade later in 1945. The Tigers had an un-hittable rotation that featured Virgil Trucks, Hal Newhouser, and Dizzy Trout. The trio, called TNT, struggled at first in the ’45 series, but the Detroit playoff tickets saw the Cubs go down in what many have called the worst World Series ever played. The Tigers would go on to redeem themselves in other fall classics, but the Cubs would suffer from a curse that still haunts them to this day.

The Tigers of today have a talented pitching staff that has turned around a dismal season. Armando Galarraga has become the ace while Jeremy Bonderman and Justin Verlander pitched like they were possessed late in the season. The offense suffered a power outage at the beginning of the season, but by the end of the year Placido Polanco, Magglio Ordonez, and Miguel Cabrera came back with a vengeance and made opposing pitchers suffer. The playoff tickets for the postseason will need the key players to continue to redeem themselves as the long road to the World Series begins in October.
