The postseason history of the Cleveland Indians looks pretty bare. The team has won only two World Series and has only captured five American League pennants, but a closer look sees a team always on the cusp of playoff tickets. The great players and great seasons deserve far more respect than a team lampooned in the movie Major League.

Around the time the Indians won their first American League pennant and their first World Series in 1920 the team was constantly near the top of the standings. Cleveland baseball fans thought that just about every season could be season that ends with playoff tickets. A little over two decades later the Indians were in contention again. Stars like Lou Boudreau helped the franchise capture its second American League pennant and World Series in 1948 with a six game series against the Atlanta Braves. The team followed with another pennant and six second place finishes in nine years.
Forty years later, the Cleveland Indians built a young team around sluggers like Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez, and Albert Belle and solid all around players like Roberto Alomar and Omar Vizquel. The pitching staff was led by Charles Nagy and the team regularly had playoff tickets at the end of the season after winning the American League Central six times in seven years. Cleveland was unfortunate to be good at the same time that the New York Yankees were dominant and only managed to make the World Series twice in 1995 and 1997, losing to the Atlanta Braves and the Florida Marlins.
The Indians have begun building another great young team again in the 21st century. Grady Sizemore is the leader of a young offense that includes Jhonny Peralta as a slugging shortstop and Ben Francisco as an all around talent in left field. For the team to go far with these playoff tickets the pitching needs to follow Cliff Lee’s lead. Lee has been tremendous this season and is likely to win the Cy Young Award. Aaron Laffey and Fausto Carmona will need to advance even more this season to compete for the World Series.
