About The Chicago Cubs

The playoff history may not be the most encouraging for the Chicago Cubs, but the present is teeming with a new sense of hope for a baseball team ready to stop being a tourist stop and become a consistent contender. Playoff tickets for Chicago before 1946 were not a rare thing. The Chicago Cubs were able to win the National League 10 times between 1906 and 1945.

Those teams went on to win just twice in the World Series, but the constant trips to the postseason meant that another World Series victory was surely around the corner. That all changed after 1945. Whether fans blame a tavern owner with a goat, management, or the baseball gods, the years that followed was anything but compelling. Collapses in 1969 and 1977 left fans frustrated and feeling helpless.

These years were followed with hope in the 1980s behind the rising star of Ryne Sandberg. The second baseman won the NL MVP in 1984 and helped take the franchise to its first playoff game in 39 years. The series went all the way to five games in the best of five series, but the Cubs could not overtake the Padres. Chicago struggled after the glimpse of hope, but won the National League East in 1989, only to go down easy to the Giants.

The ‘90s continued the tradition of futility, but after realignment the Chicago Cubs came up with a surprise Wild Card in 1998. Sammy Sosa had an MVP season and Kerry Wood won the Rookie of the Year, but once again the team could find its way out of the first playoff series. The Braves swept the Wild Card series and Chicagoans had to wait five more years before playoff tickets were back on the market.

The 21sts century promised change for the Cubs. A stellar 2003 surprised everyone when the Cubs went from fifth place the year before to first place. The NL Central champions made their way out of the first round and were five outs from a return to the World Series. Those playoff tickets for the NLCS with the Marlins ended in anguish after the cubs fell apart in game six and lost the game seven, letting the Marlins in the World Series instead. The playoff tickets to the Wild Card series against the Arizona Diamondbacks were equally frustrating as the Cubs with new stars Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Zambrano were swept.

This season the Cubs only need to continue to playing the all around baseball that has won them the NL Central to not only make it the World Series but also win it all. The pitching ensures that playoff tickets will not see another sweep. Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, and mid-season acquisition Rich Harden put three solid pitchers in the front of the series. The bats include equal parts contact and power as the line up has five players that can hit the ball up the middle or back to the fences. No single player can decide the fate of the lineup. If Derrek Lee is struggling, then Aramis Ramirez will pick up the slack. If Ramirez is not getting it done then Mark DeRosa is there. This continues throughout the lineup. The Chicago Cubs look like this season’s playoff tickets are bound for the World Series.
