The Atlanta Braves have a franchise that before the 1990s, took the club from city to city and from futile season to futile season. The franchise won the World Series in 1914 in Boston and in 1957 in Milwaukee. Those years when playoff tickets were few and far between the last place finishes defined the club.
Then in 1990 Bobby Cox emerged as the manager and by 1991 the young club turned its fortunes around started a new history for the Braves. Atlanta won the National League East fourteen times in the next 15 years, only missing in 1994 because of a players strike. Playoff tickets became a fall tradition in Atlanta and the hopes for the World Series wore on every year.
Those hopes by the fans and players only came true once though. The team that could not be beat because of a talented pitching staff that included four Cy Young Award winners and plenty of All Stars in the batting lineup, managed to make it to the fall classic five times but only won once, in 1995. Only once did those playoff tickets result in a championship.
Only once did the strong pitching staff of Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Steve Avery, and Tom Glavine result in the unquestioned place on top of the MLB. A closely contended series with the Indians that went six games and only had one game decided by more than a run granted the last piece of Bobby Cox’s masterpiece as manager. The rest of the chances saw the Braves fans buy playoff tickets and lose to the Minnesota Twins, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the New York Yankees.
David Justice, Fred McGriff, Ron Gant, Terry Pendleton, and Chipper Jones saw plenty of at bats the decade plus participation in the playoffs gave the fans in Atlanta hope for another chance at the World Series. Some may call the Braves the “Buffalo Bills of baseball”, but many others respect the constant contention that saw a single franchise dominate a division and give their fans hope year after year.
The current Atlanta Braves will need Chipper Jones to continue his amazing season and Brain McCann to provide power at the catcher position. Tim Hudson, Jair Jurrjens, and Jorge Campillo have pitched excellently. If Jo-Jo Reyes or Tom Glavine can turn around their performance then once again the Braves will have a strong staff to take on any lineup in the majors and playoff tickets will be worth buying again in Atlanta.
