The Arizona Diamondbacks may be a fresh new franchise in the eyes of many baseball fans, but every fall the club looks forward to a chance at the postseason. The age of the franchise and its brief history have done nothing to stop the fans from expecting playoff tickets around October. They watch with as much anticipation as any fan base as the pennant race boils downs and the match ups are decided.

Those match ups have often included the Arizona Diamondbacks. A National League West title in just their second season made playoff tickets a reality early on, and just two years later the club was on its way to the World Series.
That season followed a disappointing year in which the Diamondbacks finished in third place and Buck Showalter was replaced by Bob Brenly. Brenly took a team with two of the best pitchers in the league, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, and a host of veterans with Mark Grace, Luis Gonzalez, Steve Finley, and Reggie Sanders to the playoffs as National League West division champions with a 92-70 record. Tickets for the postseason were not expected to go far because of the lack of depth in the starting rotation, but the combination of Johnson and Schilling proved to be too much for the Cardinals, Braves, and Yankees to handle.
This season Randy Johnson has been slowly returning to form and while Brandon Webb and Dan Haren have been amazing. Webb is in the running for a Cy Young Award and he and Haren will need to be pitching like Schilling and Johnson in 2001 for the team take the playoff tickets further than the first round.
The offense was a problem in the middle of the year, but of late the team has turned it around. The offense is still lacking the explosiveness of the Cubs and many of the other playoff teams. Mark Reynolds and Chris Young have been hitting the ball out of the ball park and Orlando Hudson and Conor Jackson have been getting on base and advancing runners. The improved hitting might make tickets to the World Series believable now where two months ago it was still questioned whether they could win the division.
