The 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be held on July 15, 2008 at The Bronx’s Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg made the announcement on January 31, 2007 at New York’s City Hall. It’ll be the 4th game hosted at the Stadium and the 8th held in NYC, but it’ll be the 1st time since 1977 that the game is hosted by the Yankees or any NY team. For months, there was speculation the game would be held at Yankee Stadium, which was pushed along by the declaration the 2008 season would be the final one for this stadium as the team will move into the New Yankee Stadium in 2009; therefore, it was seen as only fitting the stadium would host an All-Star Game.

The very first All-Star Game was part of the 1933 World’s Fair held in Chicago, IL and was Arch Ward’s idea; he was then the Chicago Tribune’s sports editor. In the beginning, it was only going to be a one-time thing, but because of its success, it was made into an annual game. The MLB recognized Ward’s role in 1962 by creating the “Arch Ward Trophy,” which is given to the All-Star Game’s MVP every year. Normally, the game is played on a Tuesday, with no regular season games scheduled the day before or after. These 2 days are the only ones on which no games are scheduled in the major professional sports leagues of the US; the other 3 major sports are in their off season. The Home Run Derby is a contest between home run hitters which has been played the day before the All-Star game since 1985. The Taco Bell All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game, held the day before the Home Run Derby, is a game that pits teams with a mixture of former stars from the host team’s past and music, movie and TV celebrities.
