Watching a show by Cirque du Soleil can be a dazzling experience, but to witness a show such as KA can be an experience all its own. KA, the most recent theatrical debut from Cirque du Soleil, combines the troupe's traditional artistry and mind-boggling choreographic elements with acrobatic performances, martial arts, puppetry, multimedia and pyrotechnics. French for "circus of the sun," Cirque du Soleil has been touring internationally for more than 20 years. The troupe was founded by French Canadian street performer Guy Laliberté, who decided to take his performances to the next level. KA is taken from the ancient Egyptian belief in the ka" - an invisible spiritual duplicate of the body that accompanies every human being throughout their current life to the life thereafter.
So it is fitting that KA focuses more on the story, telling the tale of twins on a death-defying voyage, hoping to fulfill their destiny. The show intertwines the story with the phenomenal choreography and music that made Cirque du Soleil famous. Director Robert Lepage describes it as, The coming of age of a young man and a young woman through their encounters with love, conflict and the duality of ka," the fire that can unite or separate, destroy or illuminate." As the twins embark on their journey, the sets travel along with them, transforming into a succession of challenging landscapes that evoke an empire on stage.
When the story opens, archers and spearmen persistently hunt the twins. The chase scenes allow the artists to show off their climbing skills and flexibility while ascending to safety on stage. During the climax of the show, a battle takes place on an upright stage that offers the audience a unique and different viewing perspective. Characters spin and twist through the air in an exhibit of acrobatics, the result being utterly magnificent.
Along with the choreography, the costumes and set design, KA will enthrall you. Designed by Cirque du Soleil veteran Marie-Chantale Vaillancourt, the Asian imperial-inspired robes set the tone for the show, and the detailed sets designed by Mark Fisher add to the overall experience of KA. Lastly, we cannot forget the enticing music, without which Cirque du Soleil would be lost. The score of KA, created by René Dupéré, intensifies every scene in the show, causing audience members to be pulled into the story, while the well-timed pyrotechnics and lighting effects punctuate the tale.
It is the belief in ka's spiritual meaning that inspired Lepage to create KA and turn it into a must-see show. KA is showing at the newly developed KA Theater in the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on Las-Vegas' spectacular Strip.
