The group came together in Houston when they were in competing hard rock groups. Guitarist Gibbons was a member of Moving Sidewalks and bassist Hill and drummer Beard were members of American Blues. After the two groups disbanded the three musicians came together with the original intention of adding a fourth, but the group remained a trio that toured constantly for the first few years of their career. Then it was just a matter of showing up to the bar rather than finding tickets in advance.
ZZ Top’s big break came in 1973 with the release of Tres Hombres. The album went platinum and peaked at number eight in the charts. The group’s first hit single, “La Grange,” may have only hit number 41 on the charts, but it continues to be a huge request at concerts.
The band, up to that point, was a struggling rock group happy just to have fans buying to tickets to their small shows. Even the next two albums could not completely capitalize on the surprising success of the Tres Hombres. It was not until after a significant break that lasted from 1977 to 1979 that ZZ Top truly forged its way into rock stardom.
Gibbons and Hill returned, unbeknownst to each other, with beards that went down to their chest. Frank Beard resisted the urge to join, thus his mustache exists with some irony. That year ZZ Top released another album, Deguello. The album went platinum, but the most important result was the other staple of a ZZ Top show. People who go to their concerts expect long, scraggly beards, rock and roll, and sunglasses. The sunglasses were added after the release of the single “Cheap Sunglasses.”
The constants in place, ZZ Top began to alter there sound to change with the time. IN the 1980s they began to utilize a synthesizer. Their two biggest albums, Eliminator and Afterburner, with the help of MTV catapulted ZZ Top to multi-platinum status with world tours scheduled and sold out concert tickets. The ‘90s found the group returning to their roots. The minimalist blues rock approach kept them from fading like many other groups of the previous decade.
ZZ Top has lost of some their steam in throughout the last couple of decades, but they remain a huge draw for tickets as fans want to see the rock legends before they hang up their instruments and shed the facial hair.
