With their name coming from the radio voice procedure term "wilco", meaning "will comply”, Chicago-based alternative-rock band Wilco seems to do everything but comply. The band originated in 1994 with the remaining members of alternative-country group Uncle Tupelo, following the departure of singer Jay Farrar.

Wilco's music has not only been inspired by a variety of artists and different styles, such as Bill Fay and Television, but in turn has also been the influence for the music of a few other contemporary alternative-rock acts. Wilco set out in 1995 by continuing in the alternative-country style of Uncle Tupelo with its debut album A.M., but has since introduced more experimental elements to their music, including components taken from alternative-rock and classic pop.
Wilco earned quite a bit of attention in 2002 for their fourth album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, especially with the controversy that surrounded it. Once the recording was finished, Reprise Records turned it down and released Wilco from the label, and as part of the buy-out deal handed over all album rights to Wilco at no charge! After having streamed Foxtrot on their website, Wilco then sold the album to Nonesuch Records in 2002, but with both the Reprise and Nonesuch labels falling under the Warner Music Group umbrella, many were left confused, while leading critics to point out just how messed up the music business is these days. Having sold more than 590,000 copies, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is Wilco's most successful release to date.
Wilco has seen frequent lineup changes since their debut, with only frontman Jeff Tweedy and bass player John Stirratt remaining from the original group in 1994. Since early 2004, the other members have remained constant with Nels Cline on guitar, multi-instrumentalists Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche.
Wilco has released seven studio albums, a live double album, and three collaborative records – two with Billy Bragg and one with The Minus 5. Wilco has also been nominated for multiple awards between 1999 and 2008; most notably, having won two Grammy Awards – Best Recording Package and Best Alternative Music Album – for their fifth studio album, 2004's A Ghost Is Born. Wilco released their seventh studio album, Wilco (The Album), on June 30, 2009.
