Tim Mcgraw

Tim McGraw began his life as Samuel Timothy Smith in Dehli, Louisiana. He thought his father was Horace Smith, his step-father, but discovered a birth certificate in 1978 at the age of 11 that proved that former Major League relief pitcher Frank Edwin McGraw, Jr., or Tug McGraw, was his biological father. >> More alt

About Tim Mcgraw

His mother took him to see his real father, who did not believe her. Tug McGraw eventually came to the realization that Tim McGraw, or Sam Smith, looked just like him. The two remained close until Tug’s death in 2004.

Tim McGraw had unknowingly followed a similar path as his birth father, going to Northeast Louisiana University on a baseball scholarship. It was there that McGraw truly developed his interest in music. He played in the band the Electones while he learned to play the guitar. His fraternity roommates often hid his guitar because he was so bad, but upon hearing of the death of his musical icon, Keith Whitley, in 1989 Tim McGraw left college and went to Nashville to pursue a music career.

McGraw produced a demo single and, using his birth father’s connections, was able to get an executive at Curb Records to listen to it. Curb Records signed the young man in 1990, and two years later Tim McGraw released a self-titled album. Although the album did not do particularly well, it had three minor hits in “Welcome to the Club”, “Memory Lane”, and Two Steppin Mind”.

He released his second album in 1994, and “Not a Moment Too Soon” skyrocketed him to the top of the country charts with the best selling album of 1994. The singles “Indian Outlaw”, “Down on the Farm”, and “Refried Dreams” all were among the top singles on the country charts. Tim McGraw won the Album of the Year and Top New Male Vocalist in 1994 from the Academy of Country Music for the album.

1996 found McGraw headlining a very successful tour, The Spontaneous Combustion Tour, and meeting his future wife, Faith Hill, who was on the tour as a supporting act. A year later they married.

The album “Everywhere” again dominated the country charts and Tim McGraw’s single “It’s Your Love”, a duet with Faith Hill, spent a record tying six weeks on the top of the Billboard country singles chart.

McGraw continued to release number one selling albums. “A Place in the Sun” (1999), “Greatest Hits” (2000), “Set This Circus Down” (2001), “Live Like You Were Dying” (2004), “Tim McGraw Reflected: Greatest Hits Vol. 2” (2006), and “Let It Go” (2007) all reached number one on the US country charts. Only 2002’s “Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors” failed to take the top spot, and that album took number two.

McGraw has tried his success elsewhere, acting on occasion. He has had small roles in “The Jeff Foxworthy Show”, “Black Cloud”, Friday Night Lights”, “Flicka”, and “The Kingdom”.

His award list is plentiful with several Favorite Male Country Artist awards from the American Music Awards, many various Academy of Country Music awards, and a few Billboard Awards.
