The Wonder Stuff began playing together while they were in high school. The lead singer first found his love of music by listening to his aunt's record collection. The drummer used to fall asleep with a cassette tapeplaying as a teenager. The Wonder Stuff began performing at Artist, a college dive bar. The band had their friends harass the local radio station to play their songs.

The Wonder Stuff were happy to get the record deal, but were not sure how far they would go. The release of their debut recording convinced them that they were right where they should be after their songs began to get lots of radio play. The years of paying their dues paid off when The Wonder Stuff signed a record deal.
The Wonder Stuff knew that living life as a musician was a actual possibility as soon as the group’s first fan club was started in 1980 by Martha Okerblom. Starting out in Phoenix with a few dozen members, the club grew fast, eclipsing a couple thousand all across the country in under a year.
