About The The Superjesus

The Superjesus was formed in 1994 by Sarah McLeod and Chris Tennet. McLeod handled guitar and vocals, Tennet handled the guitars and the duo roped in Stuart Rudd to play bass and Paul Berryman to do the drumming. This line up would subsequently change with Tennet leaving the band temporarily. He was later replaced with Tim Henwood who also left due to conflicting creative perspectives and went on to form the group The Androids. The current line up still includes the remaining three members as well as Jason Slack and Aaron Tokona on guitars.

The band chose their name to parody the amount of commercial mileage the name Jesus was getting, as was seen in bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Jesus Jones and Jesus Lizard. Their debut EP Eight Step Rail tore a gaping hole into the rock music scene and grabbed fans firmly by the throats. The album spent some time on the Australian charts and the band went on to pick up a number of ARIA awards. Their first official release was called Sumo and was described by some as a giant blister of Australian rock at its best. The album was rife with heavy chords and pounding riffs blended with irresistible melodies that you would be humming for days. Sumo was followed by Jet Age and Rock Music in 2003, by which time Tennet had left the band.

In 2004, the band split with their label and said they wanted to take some time off to pursue individual projects- McLeod released a solo single in 2005 followed by a full fledged album release. Despite the disappearance of the band's website and their continuing hiatus, the members have not made any official statement that they are going to permanently go their separate ways.
