At the age of 18, Raichel joined the Israeli army, which was mandatory for all the Israelis of that age. He also joined the Army rock band and started performing covers of Israeli and European Pop Hits. Thereafter, he worked as a counselor at the boarding school for immigrants and troubled youth. Many Ethiopian Jews attended the school and introduced him to Ethiopian Folk and Pop Music.

Raichel now became a successful backup musician and recording session player of Israel's Most Popular singers. Then he pursued a project that reflected his musical ideals. Raichel then showed the respect for different cultures through music. Many of his friends and colleagues also participated in his recordings. However, the Israeli record labels considered his work very ethnic and outside the norms of the Israeli pop genre but it was one A&R man, who recognized the talent of Raichel and signed him on to the roster. The album released by them was a very big hit.

Then Raichel released his album in the year 2002, on Helicon Records. Raichel then composed and arranged the tracks, performed vocals and played the keyboard, with other musicians in the album in the year 2002. The CD consisted of various songs including: Boee (Come To Me), Mi' Ma' Amakim (Out Of The Depths), Ayal-Ayale (The Handsome Hero), Hinach Yafah (You Are Beautiful), Im Tachpetza (If Thou Wisheth), Suvi El Beyti (Come Back To My Home), Im Telech (If You Go), Be 'Yom Shabbat (On Sabbath), Brong Faya (Burn Fire), Ulai Ha 'Pa'am (Maybe This Time), Azini (Comfort Me) and Siyaishaya Ingoma (Sing Out For Leave).

The Idan Raichel Project consisted of many singers and musicians. Some of them are listed below.

Kabra Kasai, who was born in a refugee camp in Sudan during her parent's journey to Israel. She was brought up in an immigrant community in Southern Israel. She was a singer of Ethiopian origin and got acquainted with Raichel when both were in the Israeli Army.

Mira Anwar Awad, who was an Arab citizen of Israel and grew up in the Northern City of Haifa. She is a renowned singer and actress who took part in many musical and theatrical shows of Israel. She can also be heard on the dramatic Arabic-language track “Azini.”

The Project also included Sergio Braams, Shoshana Damari, Yihia Tsubara, Bongani Xulu and Din Din Aviv. All of these people are very famous musicians and leave a good impact in their projects and albums.
