Switchfoot

Switchfoot is a United States Christian rock and alternative rock band that rose to mainstream prominence in the mid-2000s. According to Jon Foreman, the name "Switchfoot" is a surfing term. "We all love to surf and have been surfing all our lives so to us, the name made sense. To switch your feet means to take a new stance facing the opposite direction. It's about change and movement, a different way of approaching life and music." >> More alt

About Switchfoot

A number of Switchfoot's songs were included in the 2002 movie A Walk to Remember. Singer and actor Mandy Moore, who starred in the movie, sang Switchfoot's song "Only Hope" during a scene in the movie.

Their latest album, The Beautiful Letdown, has been their most successful to date. The hit single "Meant to Live" enjoyed widespread airplay on rock radio stations and transitioned into the top 40. A re-recorded version of "Dare You to Move" has been high on the charts as well. The song "Gone" has also received airplay on Christian radio stations but wasn't released as an actual single. In 2005, Switchfoot received five Dove Award nominations, including Artist of the Year.

Switchfoot was formed in San Diego, CA, by singer/guitarist Jonathan Foreman and his bassist brother Tim Forman. With the addition of drummer Chad Butler the band recorded their debut LP, 1997's The Legend of Chin, appearing on Charlie Peacock's re:Think imprint. New Way to Be Human followed two years later; it was a huge hit, with the title track garnering a 1999 Dove award for Song of the Year. Keyboardist Jermoe Fontamillas joined up for 2000's Learning to Breathe, which found Switchfoot taking more steps toward mainstream modern rock. Breathe would prove to be a transition album for the group. Its success, together with their significant presence on the hit soundtrack to the 2002 Mandy Moore vehicle A Walk to Remember, set Switchfoot up for a major label run. The Beautiful Letdown, the Columbia/RED debut, dropped in spring 2003; it represented the quartet's evolution toward a more accessible sound.
