Sugar Ray is actually a raucous funk metal band. During the late '90s, band was hitting the music charts with a blend of lightly funk hip-hop grooves and sunny pop. "Sugar Ray" band was formed in 1992, in Orange County, L.A. It's all started when bassist Murphy Karges, guitarist Rodney Sheppard and drummer Stan Frazier were playing together in parties as a hard rock/heavy metal cover band. They have been performing together as cover band "Shrinky Dinx" since the late '89s.

Soon Karges's friend Mark McGrath became the lead vocalist of Shrinky Dinx and then began performing. With this new line up the band performed around the local area of L.A/San Diego. By the time they build up a dedicated following and also got one finance to make a music video. In 1994, the band signed up by Atlantic records. Though they couldn't release any album because of some legal obligations but continued to perform with the likes of DJ Homicide, and Craig Bullock. The band issued their debut album, "Lemonade and Brownies" in the spring of 1995. Their music was influenced by aggressive funk metal with some smooth touches of alternative rock and punk. This release could not do well commercially but helped to broaden their fan base.
At the beginning of 1999, the band issued their third album "14:59" it became a reasonable hit.Their popular single, the "Fly"-like "Every Morning," climbed to number three on the famous pop charts and also became band's second number one at popular modern-rock radio. This was followed by their forthcoming successful singles, "Falls Apart" and "Someday." In the summer of 1999, the band played Woodstock and also made a guest appearance on the popular Run-D.MC.'s. In the summer of 2001, McGrath issued his debut solo album, which instantly entered the charts. This was followed by "In the Pursuit of Leisure" in 2003 and “The Best Of Sugar Ray" in 2005.
