His music destiny took a come to fruition though. He left dropped out of eighth grade to learn more about the music industry in Houston, but Steve would not find his first real place in the business until at the age of 20 he moved to Nashville and became a songwriter for RCA. Earle was talented, but none of songs had great success until in 1981 with the Top 10 hit “When You Fall in Love” was recorded by Johnny Lee.

Earle got his own chance to sing in 1986 on his first album Guitar Town. The critics praised the album and eventually the fans came around and turned the rockabilly album into gold. He had similar success with his follow up album, Exit O and Copperhead Road. Steve’s effective use of the rockabilly sound had him pegged as the Bruce Springsteen of country. He was seen as a savior for a music genre that was struggling to sell tickets and albums.

Unfortunately, Steve had been nursing a heroin addiction and eventually he stopped recording or performing. By 1994 he was in jail. Earle was able to kick the addiction and come out of the pen with a new focus on his music. Train A Comin’, his first album since his release, was nominated for the Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy in 1996.

Part of his new beginning included his own label. With his music in his own control, Earle began to depart from the pop-rock country sound forced upon him in Nashville and began to experiment with everything, from bluegrass to hard rock. Steve also began to establish himself as a troubadour, playing hundreds of shows a year on tour.

The hectic concert schedule, his controversial political views (anti-death penalty, anti-Iraq War) made Earle the subject of a documentary film called Just an American Boy in 2003. Steve has become a constant contributor in the movies and television shows with his songs.

Steve Earle has continued to sell tickets at a greater pace than he has sold albums. Although his last album, Washington Square Serenade was a Top 10 hit on the U.S. Country and Indie charts.
