Initially, the band came up in the 80's when childhood pals Pete Wiggs and Bob Stanley and eventually played music in their native town of Croydon, Surrey, England. Well both took up jobs and as they completed their schooling both went on ahead with their dreams and finally determined to get into the process of creating music. They got together and came up with the name "Saint Etienne" and by the beginning of the 90s; the band had signed a huge deal with indie label Heavenly.

In 1990, the band issued their debut single; actually it was just a cover song of Neil Young's hugely popular "Only Love Can Break Your Heart." The song became and instant hit, followed by their second single, "Kiss and Make Up" which got a similar response. This time the group took the voice of Donna Savage to sing their next song. In the spring of 1991, the band released "Nothing Can Stop Us," with this sing the band added their lead vocalist Sarah Crackne. Finally the band issued their debut album "Fox Base Alpha," in 1991, which featured the soothing voice of Cracknell. This single garnered some encouraging reviews and Cracknell became the permanent part of the band.

With these successful releases the band earned the favor of British press and eventually earned very good reviews. The following years saw the release of chain of singles "People Get Real," "Join Our Club," and "Avenue." These singles proved very successful for the band and duly enhanced the popularity of the band.

Then, they released their 2nd album "So Tough" in 1993. This was also received well by the press and its sales increased drastically. In the same year followed their three more singles, "Hobart Paving," "Who Do You Think You Are," and "I Was Born on Christmas Day." In 1996, the band issued their remix album and after two years released their absolutely fresh effort, "Good Humor." In 2001, the band released "Interlude," followed by "Finisterre" in 2002.
