Sade

Sade hit the Day-Glo mid-1980s like a cool, monochromatic breeze. The singer updated the classic Continental style of Audrey Hepburn and married it with a vocal approach that was more whisper than growl. It's always worked, though, since Sade's icy vocal style brings out the stoic yet emotionally scarred nature of her well crafted torch songs. Much of the credit goes to her ever-tight, streamlined band, who have a knack for seamlessly mixing Smooth Jazz and Soul styles. After a fine debut and the excellent Promise (1985), her approach shifted as she began to mix overly repetitive light Funk workouts with darker mood pieces; so while Stronger Than Pride and Love Deluxe each contain a bit of filler, strong tracks abound. Lover's Rock (2000) is her best since Promise, and it proves that Sade doesn't have to compete with changing fashion or styles. She is a genre of one. >> More alt

About Sade

Around 1980, she started singing harmony with a Latin funk group called Arriva. One of the more popular numbers that the group would perform was a Sade original co-written with band member Ray St. John, "Smooth Operator," that would later become Sade's first stateside hit. The following year she joined the eight-piece funk band Pride as a background singer. The band included future Sade band members guitarist/saxophonist Stuart Matthewman (a key player in '90s urban soul singer Maxwell's success) and bassist Paul Denman. The concept of the group was that there could shoot-offs. In essence, a few members within the main group Pride formed mini-groups that would be the opening act. Pride did a lot of shows around London, stirring up record company interest. Initially, the labels wanted to only sign Sade, while the group members wanted a deal for the whole band. After a year, the other band members told Sade, Matthewman, and Denman to go ahead and sign a deal. Adding keyboardist Andrew Hale, the group signed to the U.K. division of Epic Records.

Sade Adu (born 16 January 1959), born Helen Folasade Adu, is the front woman and lead vocalist of the popular English group Sade. She was born in Ibadan, Nigeria of a Nigerian father and English mother, then moved to England. She was raised in Clacton-on-Sea, and moved to Camden Town, London, in 1984. She initially was the vocalist for two UK funk groups, Arriva and Pride, before launching the group that bears her name with an appearance on the Channel 4 variety show The Tube in 1984. Sade has also appeared in films such as Absolute Beginners (1986), to the soundtrack of which she made contributions, and on the Brazilian soap opera Um Anjo Caiu do Céu.
