About The Robin Williams

He claims to be a shy child who did not come out of his shell until he joined the drama department in high school. Robin Williams’ peers were not convinced he was destined for greatness, voting him “Most likely Not to Succeed”, but the folks at Julliard apparently disagreed. The esteemed school accepted him along with only 19 others in 1973. His teachers were not always impressed with his manic behavior, but were always impressed with his dramatic performances. Despite Robin Williams standout performance as a dramatic actor, he left the school and pursued a career in stand-up comedy.

Robin Williams worked hard trying to establish himself, working for tips long before people would buy tickets to his shows. His presence on stage led to acting. He was cast in The Richard Pryor Show for its short run and guest starred as an alien on Happy Days. That appearance spawned Robin Williams’ notable first sitcom, Mork and Mindy. The series ran from 1978 to 1982, just as his stand-up career was starting to take off. His popularity not only sold tickets but also attracted HBO, which gave him several comedy specials, including Off The Wall (1978), An Evening with Robin Williams (1982), and Robin Williams Live at the Met (1986).

Robin Williams success on the stage as a stand-up comedian and on the small screen eventually gave way to a movie career. By the early ‘80s, he had already been in two disasters Popeye (1980) and The World According to Garp (1982), but in 1987 his role in Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) earned him an Academy Award nomination. From there, Robin Williams stopped doing stand up and focused on a busy Hollywood schedule that had him in films like Hook 91991), Toys (1992), and Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and doing voice-overs for popular animated features like Aladdin (1992). His mere presence seemed to guarantee tickets sales in children’s and family movies.

He reached acclaim with adult audiences with his role as Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting (1997). Robin Williams had been a rapid fire comedic sensation for so long that his dramatic ability had been overlooked up till then. He tried a mixture of comedic and dramatic roles afterward, sometimes earning praise and sometimes drawing ire.

In 2002, Robin Williams returned to his original craft and put on a one man show entitled “Live on Broadway”. The stand-up comedian was back, selling tickets for live shows, and winning five Emmy Awards for his trouble.
