Railbird’s members were friends in college. The group used to practice at the bassist's basement. Railbird started performing at Spray, a college bar. The drummer used to listen to his dad's record constantly as a child.

Critics have generally commended Railbird for their ability to rile up the audience when they perform live. Champaign music critic Wally Jenson has always been pleased with band’s great bassist. Railbird’s most current project is receiving generally positive reviews from Timothy Nicodemus, a music critic out of Dallas, and Seth Quinn, from Boston.
Railbird was discovered while joking around, performing on the street one day. The band is so popular they fan clubs in every city.
Railbird knew that they were truly working musicians in 1985, as soon as the group's first fan club was started by Maria Cotroneo. The fan club quickly grew from a few dozen in Shelbyville to a few thousand nation wide.
