About Radio City Christmas Spectacular
The Radio City Christmas show has updated its roster since its original inception, but keeps some of its traditional pieces in today’s show. The show began in 1933 when the Radio City Music Hall showed Hollywood feature films on their stage. The first Christmas show was on December 21, 1933 that played along with the RKO musical movie, Flying Down to Rio, which ran for a total of two weeks.
The 90 minute show contains artistic singling and dancing infused with humor utilizes modern scenes and traditional ones dating back to the original show. The show quickly became a tradition in New York that draws millions of visitors a year. The show in 2009 will run from November 13 to December 30.
The show has also hit the tour scene as it enters many theaters a year. Road companies presented the show first at the Grand Palace Theater in Branson Missouri in 1994. The Rockettes call Missouri home, and were pleased to get to play at home again with their fans. Because of this successful show, touring groups with the Hershchend Family Corporation ran tours from 1994 to 2003. In 2008, a new touring group will hit major cities around the country, presenting at select theaters and arena venues across the country.
This year, the Christmas Spectacular will begin with the Radio City Rockettes performing a new opening number called "Ring Out Those Bells". Before the song is over, Santa Claus will appear on stage and they lift off into the air. Other scenes include, Ring Out the Bells, Twelve Days of Christmas, The Nutcracker, The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, New York at Christmas, Here Comes Santa Claus, Magic is There, Ragdolls, Let Christmas Shine, and The Living Nativity. Each scene is well known, with people buying Radio City tickets just for one or two favorite scenes.
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular has a schedule for an Eastern United States tour in many concert halls and locations ranging from the North-East to the South.
