Born as Robert Sylvester Kelly on January 8, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, R. Kelly learned music during his childhood. His music teacher and mentor Lena McLin inspired him to have a musical career. He entered the musical world as the founder and lead singer of Public Announcement. This group became quite popular due to their hip-hop beats, soul and funk styles. In 1989, the group released their first single "Why You Wanna Play Me" on Tavdash Records. As a member of the Public Announcement, R. Kelly released the album, " Born Into the '90s" on January 14, 1992. This album had two Billboard Top 40 hits, like "Honey Love", and "Slow Dance."
He and his friend Marc McWilliams won the TV talent show Big Break. Wayne Williams and Eric Payton noticed his talent. They asked him to sign a recording contract with Jive Records. He was associated with the group till 1993. As a solo artist, he soon became one of the top-selling musical acts of the nineties. His solo debut, "12 Play" became a huge hit. He is known for tracks like "Sex Me", "Your Body's Callin Me", "Bump N' Grind", "You Remind Me of Something", "I Can't Sleep", "Down Low", "Back and Forth" and "At Your Best".
When he was at the pinnacle of his success, R. Kelly decided to team up with another music industry leader, the hip-hop MC Jay-Z.
