The members of Qlimax were friends in high school. The lead singer was encouraged to play by his mom. The guitarist was encouraged to play by his teacher. Qlimax started performing at the college bar Anyplace. The Rolling Stones heavily influenced the early work of the group.

Qlimax’s first album was a dud, but the second finally got some exposure. Qlimax was discovered while joking around, performing on the street one day.
Qlimax knew that they had a real chance to become a headlining national act when Kim Rummerfield started a fan club for the group in 1981. The club started out in Miami with a handful of members, but grew tremendously once their singles started getting national air time.
