About Q-tip
Q-Tip was born Jonathan Davis but changed his legal name to Kamaal Ibn John Fareed after converting to Islam in the ‘90s. The Harlem artist started out performing in jazz-influenced A Tribe Called Quest, but also produced music while his own music was taking off. The producers influence helped performers like Nas, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston find the right hits to sell tickets and keep their career going.
As a solo artist, Q-Tip struck quickly with Amplified in 1999. The album instantly hit number four on the R&B and Hip Hop Albums and number 28 on the Billboard 200 charts. The singles “Vivrant Thing” and “Breathe & Stop” made the charts, but the recording industry was not completely sold on Q-Tip’s ability to sell tickets or albums.
His critically acclaimed follow-up album Kamaal the Abstract was not released, and his third album, Open, was not released either. After some legal battles, Q-Tip is planning on releasing the album The Renaissance in 2008 with Universal. The album has been highly anticipated and is sure to sell plenty of albums and plenty of tickets as fans cannot wait to see the former Tribe Called Quest member live in concert.
