Although relatively unknown in the United States, Paulina Rubio has conquered television, musical theater and movies in her native Mexico -- the Latin beauty also has ten years worth of recordings to show for herself! At the start of the millennium, Rubio released her first album in English. The music's combination of Latin rhythms, hip-hop influenced dance beats, and solid pop hooks have a universal appeal, regardless of language.

b. Paulina Rubio Dosamantes, 17 June 1971, Mexico City, Mexico. The daughter of Mexican film and soap opera actress Susana Dosamantes, Rubio's music career has followed a similar course to another Latin star of the new millennium, Colombian singer Shakira, with both artists selling huge amounts of records in Latin countries before breaking into the US pop mainstream.
The young Rubio followed her mother around America and Europe on film shoots and enrolled in performing arts school at the age of eight. She first began performing with the highly popular children's act Timbiriche, appearing alongside another future singer Thal¡a. Rubio spent most of the 80s as a part of the Timbiriche set up, performing to huge audiences throughout Latin America. She diversified into acting in 1988 with a minor role in the soap opera Pasi¢n Y Poder, and four years later landed the part of Andrea in the series Baila Conmigo. Rubio's solo career was launched in 1992 with the lightweight pop album La Chica Dorada. The album generated three number 1 hit singles and went on to achieve platinum sales. A string of bestselling singles and albums followed, which stuck close to the successful blueprint of her debut. During the same period, Rubio made her film debut in 1994's B‚same En La Boca and appeared as Alma in the television series Pobre Ni¤a Rica.
By the end of the decade, there was much talk of using Rubio's Latin superstar status to break into the English speaking market. The first stage in this process, her self-titled 2000 album, saw Rubio steering clear of the throwaway pop of her earlier material. Her English language debut, Border Girl, featured the Richard Marx-penned title track. Covering a wide array of musical styles, the album was an enjoyable if calculated statement of intent and duly debuted in the US Top 20 in June 2002.
