Papa Roach

Artist: Papa Roach
Genera: Rock
Latest Album: Getting Away With Murder
Background: Great big guitars and steadfast, drumstick-twirling breaks fronted by an angry rapper/cusser. If you miss the genre-smashing hybrid of Faith No More's breakout record, Papa Roach will be happy to fill the void. Regardless of whether you consider that to be positive or negative, Papa Roach took the nu-metal world by storm in 2000 with the massive hit single "Last Resort." The album that single came off of, Infest, sold about a gazillion copies, making Papa Roach a household name practically overnight. Their 2002 follow-up, Lovehatetragedy, didn't break any records, but the band managed to hold onto a respectable following. "Getting Away With Murder," their first new single in two years, was released in July 2004. >> More alt

About Papa Roach

In the small Northern California town of Vacaville, four high school friends, Jacoby Shaddix, Jerry Horton, Dave Buckner, and Will James, decided to start a band. In 1993, they became Papa Roach, a band whose influences included prominent Bay Area acts such as Faith No More and Primus. Papa Roach quickly rose to the top of the Vacaville music scene with their blending of hip-hop, groove-funk, and hardcore.
After a couple of years of playing coffeehouses, pizza joints, and keg-parties, they were headlining such places as the Cactus Club in San Jose, the Cattle Club in Sacramento, and the Berkeley Square in Berkeley.

Due to the antics of unpredictable Shaddix, and the raw power supplied by the band in live performances, Papa Roach captured the attention of younger audiences. In turn, kids showed their appreciation for the band by faithfully attending all the band's shows. In these early years, Papa Roach was able to support the Deftones on two shows, and have bands such as Incubus, Snot, Far, Human Waste Project, Downset and Fu Manchu open for them.

The Northern Californian alt-metal group Papa Roach consists of Coby Dick, Jerry Horton, Dave Buckner, and Tobin Esperance. They formed in 1993 and began releasing EPs soon after, including 1994's Potatoes for Christmas and 1995's Caca Bonita. By 1996, the group replaced original bassist Will James with Esperance and hired a new manager; the following year, Papa Roach released their first full-length album, Old Friends From Young Years, which became a surprise hit on local radio. The band's regional success led to more prominent gigs, including dates with Suicidal Tendencies, Sevendust, and Powerman 5000, and a deal with Dreamworks Records, which released Papa Roach's second album, Infest, in early 2000. The album went triple-platinum thanks to the success of the single "Last Resort." Two years later, front man Coby Dick opted to go by his given name of Jacoby Shaddix. A second album, lovehatetragedy, appeared in June 2002. That same summer the band joined a number of rap acts including Ludacris and Xzibit on Eminem's Anger Management Tour.

Papa Roach is a Nu Metal band from northern California, formed in 1993 and consisting of frontman Coby Dick (who since 2002 goes again by his given name Jacoby Shaddix), together with Jerry Horton, Dave Buckner, and Tobin Esperance. The name "Papa Roach" comes from the cockroach and as Papa Roach says: "When a bomb explodes, what's going to survive? Cockroaches." They had mostly regional success until their breakthrough with the hit single "Last Resort" from their second album, Infest. Their later albums have been less successful.

As of 2004, Jacoby Shaddix has given up rapping and has focused on just heavy metal as he stated to the Dallas Music Guide.
