The man behind Of Montreal is Kevin Barnes, of Athens,Georgia. Of Montreal is an American indie pop band formed in Athens, Georgia, fronted by Kevin Barnes. His albums are an impulsive collection of carefully-fashioned pop music gathered and sequenced. Their projects contribute several elements with the Elephant 6's peculiarly baroque bands, Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples In Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control. It was among the second wave of groups to emerge from The Elephant 6 Recording Company.

About Of Montreal
The band was formed by Kevin Barnes and named after a betrayed romance with a woman from Montreal. Barnes met Derek Almstead at Athens and Bryan Poole, who also performs as The Late B.P. Helium. They got together and recorded their first album, Cherry Peel, as well as The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit's Flower and The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy.
Several singles and a re-release of The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit's Flower came out before the release of the band's third album, The Gay Parade in 1999. With donations from countless members of the Elephant Six collective at the time, it also presented artwork from Kevin's brother David Barnes.
In 2002, Aldhils Arboretum was released, with a more or less dissimilar sound than its predecessors, as the songs were more instantly structured. This album notes the starting of the change in Of Montreal's sound, with being more rhythmical than ever before. A prosperous tour resulted, including Of Montreal's first trip to the UK, along with a tour-only EP.
The band produced several collections of singles in early 2006. Barnes recorded 90% of the band's 2007 release, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? by himself, while residing in Norway and Athens, Ga. The switch to autobiographical ideas of suicide, depression and isolation of the album were a direct result of his disturbed personal life during that period. Barnes also released a companion CD to Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? called Icons, Abstract Thee.
